Thirroul residents have launched a petition against Wollongong City Council’s decision to demolish three buildings in WH Jackson Park.

Residents were left disheartened after council handed down their decision to demolish Thirroul Library, Baby Health Care Centre and Senior Citizens Centre and built a park in its place.

Thirroul Mens Shed member Keith Woodward said to protest against the decision was the only remaining option.

“We are adamant we want to keep the building. To protest is all we can really do.”

He said the group was preparing to gauge the community’s reaction to the decision with a petition.

“We’re hoping there will be enough support to have council reverse the decision,” he said.

Mr Woodward said that despite council staff efforts to find the group another location, there was nothing else suitable.

“We’ve looked at everything but these are the only buildings in Thirroul that work.”

He said members had offered to use their construction skills to maintain the building but that was rejected.

Council has argued that the new Thirroul Library and community centre was adequate for community groups.
