Mining magnate Nathan Tinkler was at Suncorp Stadium on Monday night to watch his Newcastle Knights go against Brisbane Broncos, safe in the knowledge Wayne Bennett will be in the Hunter Valley next year.
At least that is the popular school of thought, with Tinkler's millions believed to have lured Bennett to Newcastle.
Tinkler watched the match from the corporate surrounds where Bennett often based himself when not in the coaching box at Suncorp Stadium – the Talbot Group corporate box.
Bennett's wife Trish, an occasional guest of the Talbot Group at games, also attended.
''Tinkler was an electrician in a coal mine before starting his own business. His big break came in 2006 when he borrowed $500,000 to buy a mine. He sold his company to Macarthur Coal for $275 million. In 2008 he was on BRW's Young Rich list, worth about $441 million. He is the richest man in Australia under 40 years old.
In July 2010, Tinkler floated his company Aston Resources with $400 million worth of shares offered, leaving Tinkler with $600 million worth of the company. In early October 2010, it was announced that Tinkler was set to purchase a 50% share in the Ford V8 Supercar team, Dick Johnson Racing. Taking over from Charlie Schwerkolt as Dick Johnson's partner within the team. Tinkler lives in a $13.3 million house at Merewether Beach.''
