Food Shortage the Reality

Within the past two weeks, the dairy industry has come under attack for the inclusion of permeate in some milk products (permeate is a naturally occurring element of milk processing and helps to ensure the consistency in flavour and texture that consumers demand), the Department of Agriculture and Food has ceased the production of 1080 impregnated oats (used to prevent sheep being eaten by foxes and wild dogs), farmers have seen a reduction in the farmgate price for both beef and lamb, a bunch of crazed activists have chained themselves to a live export vessel (which ironically was set to provide protein for countries who understand the concept of a food shortage) and the WA Labor Party has released an animal welfare discussion paper that fails to demonstrate a comprehension of the realities of food production. http://fw.farmonline.com.au/news/state/opinion/comment/you-dont-know-what-you-got-til-its-gone/2542234.aspx

  1. Is permeate a waste product?
Certainly not – Permeate is a valuable component of milk containing lactose, vitamins and minerals. Through innovation, the dairy industry has been able to use this valuable component to standardise milk composition and create a range of innovative dairy products. http://www.dairyaustralia.com.au/Dairy-food-and-recipes/Dairy-Products/Milk/Milk-facts/Milk-facts-FAQs.aspx
Another Quote/ MEDIA reports this week exposed dairy companies as using a by-product called permeate in their milk to form up to 16 per cent of the finish product.
It was suggested the supermarket milk wars had driven some major producers to mix permeate in their milk to reduce the cost per litre.

However, Dairy Australia has hit back and revealed permeate is a valuable by-product of the cheese-making process.

THEY LIE… In the milk industry it’s called ”permeate” – a watery, greenish waste product from the production of cheese – and documents obtained by Fairfax reveal that it forms up to 16 per cent of the fresh milk we drink.
